My dad was a very special man. He personified quiet strength. He was a man of integrity, determination, and confidence. He was kind, caring, and had a heart bigger than life. When he smiled, his eyes had a special twinkle. And he taught my brother and me the importance of giving back, helping those less fortunate. He taught by example.

Family was always his top priority. I grew up in a loving home surrounded by the love my parents had for each other and us. My mom and dad met as children and were married for 53 years before he passed. They loved and cared deeply for each other. They lived the love that so many of us only dream about. When going for a walk, he would always hold my mother’s hand or place his arm around her shoulders.

He never raised his voice when scolding us — which was more unnerving because when you heard that even keel tone in his voice, you knew you were in trouble. But even then, the reprimand came from a place of love; I see that now.

Still, after 23 years of him being gone, I miss him very much every day. And I find myself saying, “If Dad were here, what would he do?”

If you are fortunate to have your dad, give him what he really wants — to spend time with you. Presents are nice, but what holds more value and something that he will forever cherish is the time he gets to spend with you. Happy Father’s Day to all! And to my Dad, Happy Father's Day, love you.

"My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me."
