Just remember to show compassion and never miss the opportunity to love and care for them. Call them, visit them often, and be present in their lives. And if possible, open your home to them. But most importantly, open your heart.

The elderly still have a lot to say — to share. We can learn so much from them; don’t deprive yourself of the opportunity to get a first-hand account of events that shaped our world. You will be surprised how much they know, and what new or different perspectives they can add to our lives; and, us to theirs.

Did you know that presently there are over 63 million caregivers in the United States? These folks care for sick or elderly adults with no training on how to care for them or needed support; some with medically complex issues. Just guided by their love and determination. Some are spouses, daughters, sons, family members, or caring friends. I was one of them.

If you are fortunate to have your dad, give him what he really wants -- to spend time with you.

Our parents are our compass; our unconditional support system. As you grow and get stronger and become more independent, they start to slow down, age and become more dependent.

My plan for the Basket of Words site is to balance reality, the blog, with whimsical, fun stories. For the blog, the focus will be on the experience of caring for an aging parent. A topic that can be both challenging and rewarding. The growing population of aging parents offers lots to talk about and share. Then, a collection of original fictional short stories. The micro-stories will change monthly.
